11) According to available reports, how many lives have red-light cameras at intersections saved?
- between 0 and 100
- between 100 and 1,000
- between 1,000 and 5,000
- between 5, 000 and 10,000
- More than 10,000
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that motorists who run red lights cause about 5% of all car accidents. Because of stats like this, it would seem reasonable to presume that red light cameras constitute a reasonable use of monitoring to increase safety. While some studies report that red light cams have reduced red light running, others indicate that the number of accidents at monitored intersections has actually increased since the cameras were introduced. Indeed, these studies suggest that simply increasing the time a traffic light is yellow by one second is far more effective at reducing collisions than tracking drivers.
